Black Sheep-Les Arts Decoratifs Fashion Expo 1990-2000
When I was first starting my business I had the pleasure and honor of meeting Valerie Steele Chief Curator of the Museum at FIT in NYC http://www.valeriesteelefashion.com
She encouraged me to go against the grain of what most vintage dealers were buying and selling and stick with my interest in later designers.
So with Valerie's blessing I decided to ignore some of the fellow vintage dealers who rolled their eyes or turned up their noses when I told them I was a "vintage dealer" that focused on and loved the 1980s-2000 pieces. I was the black sheep of the vintage world buying and selling pieces that many people didn't consider vintage. I didn't have a crystal ball or the years of experience other dealers had I just bought and sold what I considered to be interesting.
This year in particular I've been very successful focusing on later pieces. More and more museums are incorporating the later pieces into their expos and in the auction world more recent designs have realized some phenominal prices.
So if you are like me you might want to visit the History of Fashion Expo dedicated to fashions of 1990-2000
at Les Arts Decoratifs in Paris.

Who Needs A Matisse? VIVIENNE WESTWOOD
In my spare time I've been reading art books. Call me a nerd but if I'm not looking at clothing I'm looking at art antiques and rare books.
Since I'm just starting the chapter on Matisse this wonderful piece caught my eye.
Lot 1016
Vivienne Westwood `Nostalgia of Mud' (Buffalo) collection printed cotton jersey toga dress,
Autumn-Winter, 1982-3, World's End labelled,
cut shorter at the front and with long train-like panel printed in dark brown with Matisse inspired motifs
Estimation
£700-£1000
Much less expensive that a Matisse of course and just think of how great you'll look.

The Perfect Man-TOM FORD
Every woman wants to find the perfect man- gorgeous, rich, a nice smile and of course who loves fashion.
In my book Tom is one of the few perfect men out there and I was so excited to learn that he will be back on the fashion scene very soon.
Yesterday www.hintmag.com broke the news that Tom Ford will be returning to womens wear. You can read more about it in the December issue of US Vogue.
And of course because this blog is about vintage I just had to share a blast from the not so distant past of one of my favorite Tom Ford pieces. I sold this navy blue velvet suit by Tom Ford for Gucci last year.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York owns the men's version of this in a gorgeous cherry red.
Fall Winter 1996-1997
Tom we missed you! Welcome back!

WHO OWNED THIS?-Provenance Counts
This beautiful piece caught my eye as I was looking through the archives of one of my favorite shows http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/archive/200204A40.html
This 19th centure cluster necklace without a provenance was valued at $800 but because it was given to the owners family by Mary Todd Lincoln the value jumps to $2,500-3,500. For a full transcript of the valuation go to the link above.
